Indigenous culture and heritage will be the focus of the Booin Gari festival now being held at United Synergies on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 Originally scheduled for January, the event was postponed due to inclement weather and regional flooding.

Event organiser Lyn Harris said the event's name - Booin Gari - belonged to the Kabi Kabi (Gubbi Gubbi) language and means Come This Way. She said the event was a true opportunity to build positive relationships and share in local Indigenous culture.

The event will feature a range of guest presentations from local community artists and performers as well as learning circles and workshops incorporating story telling, Indigenous art, boomerang art, didgeridoo and dance workshops and bush tucker tastings.

There will also be a jumping castle and climbing wall for the children. Support services will provide displays and be available to assist with information. All activities and performances on the day, including a sausage sizzle and bush tucker will be free.

Ms Harris said Booin Gari provided an opportunity for local Aboriginal young people and their families to come together and celebrate their culture, but also to share it with the broader Sunshine Coast community.

"The key purpose of the event is to provide an annual forum for celebration, connection, engagement and sharing of knowledge, history and culture amongst community members," she said.

The event is now entrenched as an annual event on the Sunshine Coast calendar with attendance numbers continuing to grow each year.  It provides a valuable opportunity to connect non Indigenous and Indigenous young people, families and service providers in a respectful and positive environment.

Booin Gari will be hosted by United Synergies at its 14 Ernest Street, Tewantin premises between 10.00am and 2.00 pm.
The event is supported by the Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government Department of Communities.
