COOLUM KITE FESTIVAL presented by SUPA IGA Sunshine Coast
Program and tide information - 7 & 8 October

With the weekend fast approaching, the organisers of Coolum Kite Festival presented by SUPA IGA Sunshine Coast would like to release additional program and safety information.

The festival begins Saturday afternoon 7 October at 4pm.  A glorious full moon will provide a spectacular backdrop to the evening's entertainment, which this year includes live world music and dance artists, pyrotechnic sky-divers, a children's lantern parade and of course the ever popular fireworks!

Due to the outdoor nature of the event, Coolum Kite Festival Chair, Noel Mooney, would like to draw the public's attention to Saturday evening's tide and sunset times, and encourages patrons to arrive early.

"The sun sets at 5.51pm on Saturday evening, and with entertainment kicking off at 4pm, there will be plenty to do on the beach but make sure you bring a torch for the evening!" he said.

"A High tide of 1.85m is scheduled for 7.56pm.  Local SES volunteer and life-savers will be patrolling the creek and beach, but we ask that patrons supervise their children carefully".

There will be lighting set up around the event during the evening and the full moon will also provide illumination for the site. However patrons are encouraged to bring a torch especially those intending to use the beach to walk back from Stumers Creek to Coolum Beach.

A kaleidoscope of colour over Coolum Beach!

Coolum Kite Festival is back this October 7 and 8, and for the 6th time the skies above Coolum's Stumers Creek will come to life with hundreds of kites of all size, shape and colour!

First held in 2000, this unique and vibrant event has consistently grown in popularity each year, with last year's event attracting over 40,000 excited participants and spectators. Coolum Kite Festival 2006 is once again set to celebrate all that is great about the Queensland lifestyle - sun, surf, the beach and enjoying the outdoors!

With kite flying aplenty, fireworks, the RAAF Roulettes, live music, roving performers, food and market stalls, a schools program, workshops, night time skydiving, a celebrity tandem jump, kite surfing, lantern parade, sculptures, special Kids Zone and much more, Coolum Kite Festival's 2006 program is the most extensive to date, with a wider variety of activities on offer than ever before.

In 2006 the Festival will celebrate a range of different cultures with kites and kite flyers from Australia and abroad.

This year Coolum Kite Festival welcomes three traditional kite masters from Taiwan. These highly skilled kite artists are currently creating a Koala train kite as a special gift to Coolum Kite Festival and it will fly over Stumers Creek for all to enjoy throughout the festival.

From China, Coolum Kite Festival also welcomes The Xiamen Dazhou Kite Team. Appearing at Coolum Kite Festival 2006 thanks to the support of the Maroochy Shire Sister Cities Community Association and the Maroochy Tourism Industry Advisory Board, The Xiamen Dazhou Kite Team currently hold the title of Chinese National Champions, and their attendance is a big coup for Coolum Kite Festival!

For budding kite artists and anyone else interested in the rich culture and great skill of these international guests, a series of workshops will be held during the week prior to the festival. This year Coolum Kite Festival will again take kite making to the kids, with a series of workshops by Queensland kite artist Tony Rice scheduled in local schools. These popular workshops attracted over 300 enthusiastic participants last year. Check the Festival website for workshop details.

Continuing with the Festival's multicultural theme, the 2006 Welcoming Ceremony on Saturday 7th October will feature dance styles from around the world. Take in an afternoon workshop at the CWA Hall or Tickle Park (bookings essential) on African dance, Salsa, Flamenco or Fire twirling and then use your new skills to dance up a storm at Stumers Creek when the sun goes down!

With music by Hot Mambo, Jaleos Flamenco, OKA and Jambezi playing live on the beach at Stumers Creek, fireworks and pyrotechnic skydivers filling the sky and a parade of lanterns passing by, you simply won't find a better dance floor!

On Sunday, all eyes will turn to the skies as hundreds of kites take flight from 10.00am. Check out the amazing skills of the precision kite flyers and marvel as a member of Brisbane's Kaos crew attempts to break the speed kite flying record of 200km/hr with  a Revolution super sonic quad line kite and a dual line kite.

Coolum Kite Festival 2006 is thrilled to have the fantastic RAAF Roulettes on board. The Australian Air Force's elite formation aerobatic display team will be doing what they do best, with amazing displays on Saturday and Sunday.  Don't try this at home! And keep your eyes turned to the sky for skydiving displays as well.

If you find yourself seeing red - don't worry, everyone else will be too! This year our Festival artists have a red theme and you'll see it materialise in huge illuminated lanterns, massive banners and flags and even a big red illuminated boat floating down Stumers Creek.

This year the Festival has a special treat for the Mums and Dads. Coolum Kite Festival Kids Zone will be bursting with activities to keep your little tackers busy, including hip hop and break dancing, face painting, tiny tot's music and movement, sand sculpture, kite workshops and much more.

And finally, Kite Surfing enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that Australia's biggest downwind event, OFF THE LIP, is back in 2006! Commencing at Sunshine Beach or Mudjimba, depending on wind direction, the maximum of 60 competitors will make a spectacular sight, racing their way back to Stumers Creek at Coolum. OFF THE LIP is currently scheduled for Saturday but may be run on the Sunday, depending on conditions.
