Record numbers will be tri'ing for the first time

One of Australia's most popular sporting events, the Noosa Triathlon sees record entries from first timers

A record 38%* of athletes taking part in this year's Noosa Triathlon will have entered the event for the first time, according to entry details from USM Events -- the organisation behind the Noosa Triathlon. Of the 3000 triathletes taking part in the individual event, 1128 are participating in the event for the first time, demonstrating a surge in interest amongst Australians taking part in triathlons.

"Since the Sydney Olympic games in 2000, Australia has seen a tremendous growth in triathlon participation and training," commented Garth Prowd, USM Events Managing Director.

"Australian triathletes like Emma Snowsill who won gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics have had a huge impact on the number of Australians competing in the sport meaning triathlon is no longer a sport reserved for the super elite. From the novice beginner making it across the finish line to skilled and elite athletes racing towards a spot on the Olympic podium, there's an opportunity for every Aussie to 'tri' a triathlon, either as an individual or as part of a team, he added"

Australia's most popular triathlon for 27 years, the Noosa Triathlon reaches full capacity earlier each year, drawing 5,800 competitors to the Olympic-distance (1.5km swim, 40km cycle, 10km run) challenge that also lures Australia's top professionals including Olympic Gold medalist Emma Snowsill, World Champion Emma Moffatt, and Commonwealth games gold medalist Brad Kahlefeldt . This year's Noosa triathlon takes place from the 28th October till the 1st November and reached capacity for individuals within four days and over 1000 people currently on the waiting list. Team entries are also at capacity with 950 teams taking part. Festival event entries have increased by 29% compared to October last year, with two weeks still to go.

This year's Noosa Triathlon will be a weeklong festival of swimming, cycling, running, triathlon events for everyone from 7 -- 80+, two golf tournaments one for celebrities and one for businesses, Queensland's largest sport and lifestyle expo and a serious after party 'participants' may also need to train for.

Supporting events on the program include: Eyeline Noosa 1000 Ocean swim -- celebrating its 21st anniversary, past winners include Kieren Perkins, Grant Hackett and Ky Hurst. Asics 5km Bolt -- past winners include Sonia O'Sullivan and Craig Mottram, Northside Party Hire Cycling Grand Prix -- featuring the likes of TDF riders Robbie McEwen and Koen de Kort and our best women cyclists in their own event.

In recent years the Aussie Footy Legends triathlon has drawn the cream of NRL and AFL players to compete in the modified triathlon as part of the 'Super Saturday' action. The competition has grown so popular with high profile athletes across all sports it was recently re-named 'Legends Tri'. This year spectators and participants can expect to see some of Australia's finest swimmers, as well as the Socceroo's and cricketers making debut appearances. Some of the other unexpected faces not usually associated with triathlon competing on the day include: Ky Hurst, Sara Carrigan, Brett Kirk (Sydney Swans), Brisbane Lions (Jamie Charmon, Luke Power, Simon Black, Daniel Merrett), Geoff Huegill and Steve Moneghetti to name a few.

The 2009 Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival will be held from 28 October to 1 November.

Celebrity Tri Bar

Each year the Noosa Triathlon Multi Sport Festival offers up more than just sporting events to take part in and watch. The ever expanding entertainment programe continues, and the tradition of a little known event that happens each year has grown in momentum to the extent it is now sponsored - The Quay West Finlandia Celebrity Tri Bar.
This year it will be happening at The Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club on Friday 30 October from 7pm -- 8pm.
In teams of three the celebrities will be testing their cocktail making skills in creating the official drink of the 2009 Noosa Triathlon.
The drink not only has to reflect the festival but also come up with a suitable name.
The world triathlon champion will be defending the title she won last year when she created the winning cocktail -- Kiwi Surprise.
Brisbane Lions superstars Jamie Charmon, Daniel Merrett and Troy Selwood looked very comfortable behind the bar and created some mind blowing concoctions. The boys are looking forward to having another go at taking the title.
Joining them this year will be Olympic gold medallist Emma Snowsill who will again be up against her namesake Emma Moffatt in a contest of a different kind.
"I'm keen to have a go at this -- I think I make a pretty mean cocktail," said Snowsill.
Lee Troop is always a man on the run and that was reflected in his effort last year producing a glass half full of vodka, toped up with lemonade.
Other contenders will be former surf ironman Ky Hurst, Olympic gold and bronze medallist Ken Wallace. Also joining them swimming sensations Jessica Schipper and Bronte Barratt.
The general public is invited to come along and watch these celebrities in action and help taste test to determine the 2009 champion and name with winning
