Australian croquet title a battle of the minds

Croquet on Queensland's Sunshine Coast will be along way from the image of garden parties with ladies dressed in crinolines and the game being played by the Queen and Alice in Alice in Wonderland with flamingos as the mallets and hedgehogs as the balls.

With a national title up for the grabs, the best croquet players from around Australia and New Zealand will highlight the best that the modern game offers.

The 56th Australian Croquet Championships will be hosted by the Sunshine Coast for the first time and played at clubs from Bribie Island to Noosa from September 24 to October 2.

The event is expected to inject about $100,000 into the region with the open singles offering $2250 in prizemoney, of which $1000 will be presented to the winner.

Headquarters for the event is the Caloundra Mallet Sports Club, and further information is available from them on (07) 5492 7789.

Spokesperson Annette Manning said croquet was now played in more than 20 countries.

"Croquet is a game that requires great concentration and strategy to out-think your opponent," Ms Manning said.

Caloundra Tourism Inc president Mike Wilkinson said the croquet championships were welcome in Caloundra and would promote the region as a visitor destination.

"Sporting events like the national croquet championships give people another reason to visit while raising the profile of our destination around Australia and New Zealand," Mr Wilkinson said.

The competition runs from 8.30am to 4.30pm each day with free entry for spectators. The doubles final is scheduled for September 26 and the open singles on October 2 at the Caloundra club's Olm Street headquarters.
