"My keen and long time interest in drawing human figure has eventually led me to concentrate on life drawing of music players in rehearsal and in live performance. I found the engagement of the players with their music and their musical instruments provide a variety of inspiring and unique compositions. Also I believe that the rhythm and the energy of music gives another stimulant that often intuitively get depicted in the quality and the movement of the lines in my drawings and the application of paints and colours in my paintings. In my art works I aim at creating expressive, joyous and dream like atmosphere, I hope I am succeeding in that".
Monkeith was born in Babylon, Iraq. After few months traveling in Europe early 1980 and residing in Morocco for 2 years, he arrived to Australia mid 1983 as a skilled migrant due to my engineering qualification.
Monkeith formally started his art studies in Baghdad (1974-1975). After arriving to Australia he studied at the National Art School in East Sydney (1984-1987) both full and part time. He studied Printmaking part time in Hornsby TAFE, NSW (1999-2000) and attended a year part time course at Newcastle University NSW (2001-2002).
Between 1986 and 2001 Monkeith participated in a number of group exhibitions in Sydney and Newcastle. He had his first solo exhibition in James Harvey Gallery in Balmain, Sydney. In 1995 Monkeith participated in a traveling exhibition to Japan as part of a Sister City Art representation from Gosford City, NSW. Monkeith moved to Noosa in 2004.
