On Wednesday, September 18th, The Sunshine Coast access advisory network will be holding a forum to highlight accessibility on the Sunshine Coast. Focusing on how important it is for business and services to be aware of the practicality needed when it comes to access. SCAAN, a voluntary group formed two years ago have in that time liaised with several private and government bodies, to improve the practicality of use of important areas on the coast. One of these areas that feedback has been welcome is the Maroochydore bus station where SCAAN have had significant input into the upcoming enhancement of the facilities.

SCAAN itself was born out of the frustration of a few people with disabilities, living on the coast, who thought there had to be a better way of cooperating so that buildings and infrastructure doesn't have to be retrofitted. Saving not only money but also the frustration of being not able to fully use the facility.

"for a number of years a few of us had been working hard to try and encourage Government at all levels including councils and developers who are responsible for building infrastructure, shopping centres, businesses and homes to look beyond the minimum standards, required by law and build beyond those standards to include the practicality of use and longevity of the building or infrastructure." stated one of their founding members.

"We hope to give a little insight at the forum to businesses to encourage them to ask for more accessible premises in order that they can encourage more people with disabilities, parents with prams and others to utilise their facilities."

"At this forum we will also be holding our inaugural accessible business awards presentation, which we hope will also encourage other businesses to become more accessible. We will be able to promote that business to the disabled community, not just for the physical access but also the way you are treated, welcomed and if necessary assisted. We are keen to work with businesses on this aspect as well."

In the future we will hold forums across the coast on different subjects that we feel are important to the community, all are welcome.
