Funny Forum comes to coast theatre
Following the huge success of the musical La Cage aux Folles in 2004, Lind Lane Theatre is following up with what should be one of the biggest musicals on the coast this year, the hilarious musical comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, opening on Wednesday 11th May.
Set 200 years before Christ, Forum is the farcical story of Pseudolous and his determination to free himself from a lifetime of slavery. Utilising every slapstick routine in the book, Pseudolous connives his way through the plot with devious intent and scant regard for those who (do) get in the road.
The show has been a smash hit worldwide with a brilliant score by Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story) and a story co-written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbert who brought M*A*S*H to our television screens.
Well known Director Peter Blyth (Me and My Girl, Oklahoma) has been lucky to secure local actors ideally suited to Roman characterisations. Grant and Julie Marks appear as wealthy husband-and-wife citizens, Senex and Domina, ably supported by their retinue of retainers, Russell Morgan as Hysterium and Adam Greenwood taking on the enourmous character Pseudolous in his first major role. Sam Coward, only recently back from a thespic hiatus, fits the role of Miles Gloriosis like a glove. Also in the cast are Chris Hewitt (Grease), Lisa Sharples (La Cage) and Tomas Passeggi (Snow White).
Musical Director, Brett Whitchurch, has assembled an orchestra of talented locals to take on the challenging task of backing Sondheim's eclectic melodies and alliterated lyrics. Every song should be received by a spellbound audience, the score is that good.
Rehearsals have been a continual hoot according to cast members, and the show starts funny and doesn't stop being funny until the final curtain call.
