The Events Centre, CaloundrTony Kirwan, founder of Destiny Rescue is presenting to an audience of over 250 business people on Friday 15 July, at The Events Centre, Caloundra.
The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce presents over 30 events annually and the Better Business Breakfasts are a popular event on the fixtures. These popular breakfast events provide an educational and motivational keynote address by a national leader to broaden our minds and develop our personal and professional selves.
Tony Kirwan was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and moved to Australia with his family when he was ten years old. He grew up in Cairns and eventually moved to North Queensland, where he ran his own electrical business.
Destiny Rescue’s story begins with Tony and his friend sitting together at lunch, discussing what to do with the rest of their lives. “For whatever reason we got all deep and meaningful,” Tony remembers. He had always thought he would support overseas charity work, but during that conversation, he felt called for the first time to do the work himself.
In October of 1998, Tony travelled to Cambodia with his father. There Tony saw kids in the dump with open sores, swollen bellies and little to no clothing. One night during the trip, Tony sensed an overwhelming need to do something. “I remember I was about to pray something like, ‘God have mercy on these children’, but before I could even get the words out, I felt what I should really be praying is, ‘God have mercy on me if I don’t do something to help these kids.’”
When Tony returned from his trip, he shared his experience with his wife. She told him that she too felt called to work with vulnerable children. Eventually, their young family moved to Thailand to do volunteer work for an organisation there. While living in Thailand, Tony and his wife heard a man tell how he had been offered children for sex for $400 USD in Bangkok. “When I heard this story it really hit me, and I knew I had to do something,” Tony says. “It was at this point, I believe, God put the vision of Destiny Rescue in my heart.”
Today, Destiny Rescue is an internationally-recognized Christian non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing children trapped in the sex trade. Over the years Destiny Rescue has helped hundreds of children escape brothels, bars and red-light districts. We’ve brought many of them into our Rescue Homes, where the children are cared for in a safe, loving environment.
Destiny Rescue currently operates in Thailand, Laos, India, Cambodia, the Philippines and the Dominican Republic, with hundreds of employees and volunteers committed to our mission: To see sex slavery ended in our lifetime.
Tony lives in Chiang Rai, Thailand, with his family. He continues to rescue children and to advocate on behalf of the vulnerable and exploited.
Caloundra Chamber of Commerce, Better Business Breakfast is open to Chamber business members and non-members.
