Aftershocks is powerful and insightful theatre that tells a moving story of the cataclysmic 1989 Newcastle earthquake and its aftermath. Tales of extraordinary courage and love in the face of danger and loss of life mingle with tales of fear, anger stupidity and greed.

The Tsunami in Asia has brought home to Australians the power of nature to create havoc, kill and destroy people's cherished buildings and places. The people of Newcastle experienced that destructive power first hand when an earthquake shattered their lives on 28 Dec 1989. Aftershocks concentrates on one place and on one group of people- the Newcastle Workers Club.

Author, Paul Brown wrote of the play. 'Aftershocks began life as conversations between staff, members and friends of the Newcastle Workers Club. It is gutsy, bloody, and humorous. It tells what these people did on the day of the Newcastle earthquake when their club was reduced to a pile of twisted rubble, and several of their friends died. The play speaks of some universal themes: in disaster, how do people react and assume leadership? How does healing occur after loss of life? How do we express our experience of crisis through language?'

The power of the original stories, told simply in people own words, personalises this event. The reality of the event is brought home in the Noosa Arts production with the use of live TV footage of the earthquake and its aftermath, courtesy of NBN Newcastle. The production is proudly sponsored by WIN television.

Director Jane Rivers has assembled an excellent cast, including Brett Klease (Popcorn), Megan Deem (Popcorn), Stephen Moore (Wolf Lullaby, Blackrock), Jenni McCaul (Blackrock, Alarms and Excursions) and Shane Ross (Alarms and Excursions, Chicago).

Noosa Arts Theatre celebrated a fantastic year of success in 2004 when it was received 23 of the 35 awards made at the Sunshine Coast Theatre Alliance Sixth Annual Star Awards night at the Caloundra Civic Cultural Centre on Saturday 5 February.

The awards shows the talent that Director, Jane Rivers, has assembled for Aftershocks. Jane herself was the director of Black Rock which won the award for the best production in the drama section in 2004. Jane also won an award for best female supporting role in the comedy section. Other Aftershocks cast to win 2004 awards are Stephen Moore for best male supporting role in a drama; Jenni McCaul for best female leading role in a comedy and Brett Klease for best male supporting role in a comedy. The backstage crew is equally impressive with set designer, George Courtney, receiving three separate awards for set design in 2004 and lighting designier, Nelson Tomlin, also receiving an award.
