AGED CARE REFORM: WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR YOU? On Sunday, July 6 the Sunshine Coast Hinterland branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) will hold a community meeting to discuss the often-daunting aged care system and its effects on our local residents. Sweeping changes to the way both residential and in-home aged care programmes are funded and administered come into effect on July 1.
This prompts the question what do these changes, combined with unexpected cuts to pensions announced in the recent federal budget, mean for you, your family and our community? This free and inclusive community meeting will endeavour to help demystify the aged care riddle, with Shayne Neumann MP, the federal member for Blair, Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Shadow Minister for Ageing taking centre stage as key note speaker. "Tony Abbott has been scaremongering about the ageing population; painting the elderly as economic burdens, telling Australians they need to work longer, retire later with reduced pension income, and pay more for essential ageing services," Mr Neumann recently told a community forum in Tasmania. "Older Australians face enough challenges without adding more pressure on aged care providers to increase their fees."
Representatives from the Queensland Nurses Union and local aged care organizations will be on hand to answer questions, offer advice and provide literature for those in attendance.
