What's happening around the ridges??
On the first weekend in August around 4000 people visit Cooloola Rocks & Minerals for their annual Kybong Rock Fest. It is on Friday 4 to Sun 6 August between 9-5 (3 pm Sunday) with stallholders showing off their finds while fossicking around Australia.
Many Gem clubs take the opportunity to stock up on supplies and have a yarn to those who have been to the gem, opal or fossil fields. It is a great relaxing campout for rockhounds and an eye-opener to those who may want to get into fossicking.

A bit more info...
Several Gem clubs from Gympie, Buderim, Brisbane, Glenn Innes, Nambour, Bundaberg, McKay and Childers, to name a few, set up camp and have great time.
In the past three years we have had an International stalls, and we get inquiries form Morocco, Spain, Afghanistan and Germany re stalls.
A large proportion of the Australian public dig up rocks from one part and take them to another. This is called 'fossicking'. Hobbyists, usually from a Gem Club, turn pretty stones, or valuable gems, into jewellery, paper weights, decorations, etc, or just collector items. This needs equipment so industry supplies that need. One of our stalls is a supplier of equipment, tools, lapidary supplies, instruction books, etc.
Another aspect of rocks and mineral is their metaphysical properties or healing powers. There are stallholders who provide knowledge on this topic and demonstrate the powers. Then there are specialist collectors who find one type of rock, - agates, crystals, fossils, thunder eggs, jasper, opal, and come to the rock Fest to find it the easy way!
Food, entertainment, demonstrations, and lots of fun is on again at the Kybong Rock Fest.
