Anzac Day is a day we remember all Australians who served and died in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. The spirit of ANZAC, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity.
On Thursday 25 April, the array of Anzac Day activities organised by the Tewantin-Noosa RSL Sub Branch are proof of the important place this day holds in our hearts.
ANZAC Day traditionally begins with the Dawn Service, a reminder of the dawn landing on Gallipoli in 1915. The Tewantin Dawn Service commences at 5.30am at the Cenotaph at Poinciana Avenue and will be followed by breakfast in The Bistro provided free for sub branch members and for $7.50 for their partners.
Also following the dawn service, will be a Cemetery Service with courtesy buses leaving the club at the conclusion of the dawn service.
The Anzac Day Parade is another tradition which stirs the heart. The Tewantin parade starts at 9.00am with a route from Sidoni Street to the Cenotaph.
The parade is being led by the New Zealand Veterans Band who will also lead the national anthem.
The New Zealand Veterans Band is a 25 strong brass band comprising former New Zealand Army regular and territorial force musicians and was formed in 2012 in response to an official invitation from the Royal Passchendaele Society to support their ANZAC Day Services. The Tewantin State School Choir will follow the national anthem with a performance of Waltzing Matilda at the cenotaph.
John Philpot who is a Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub Branch member with a 46 year association with the Royal Australian Air Force will be the Reviewing Officer on the saluting dais and the guest speaker at the Service of Commemoration at the Cenotaph at 9.30am. An F18 followed by two veteran war birds will fly overhead at 9.34am.
Following the parade there will be a function in the Diggers Bar of the Tewantin Noosa RSL for Sub Branch members, serving and ex-serving personnel and their partners.
Finger food, drinks and entertainment will be provided. The New Zealand Veterans Band will perform for 45 minutes and Tour of Duty will play from 1.00pm with a tribute to the music of the Vietnam War – a rock and roll soundtrack of the 60’s and 70’s.
Tickets are $20 per head or $30 per couple and must be pre-purchased at the Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub Branch office.
There will also be Two Up played in the South Bar from 10am to 2pm. From 2.30pm the Digger’s Bar will open to the public with Tour of Duty playing.
