Archie Roach celebrates 25 years since the release of his internationally acclaimed 1990 debut album, Charcoal Lane, which won multiple awards and rocketed a young Roach into the national consciousness.
Charcoal Lane was co-produced by Steve Connolly and Paul Kelly. It won Roach two ARIA awards, and, unprecedentedly, an international ‘Human Rights Achievement Award’ for the song ‘Took The Children Away’. Roach wrote the song about his own experience as a member of the Stolen Generations having been forcibly removed from his own family and community at a very young age.
The album received rave reviews both in Australia following its release in 1990 and overseas following Roach’s first international tour to North America in 1992. US Rolling Stone named Charcoal Lane one of their Top 50 albums for 1992
“In the best singer-songwriter tradition, Charcoal Lane is deeply moving in both personal and political terms.” US Rolling Stone June 1992
“Archie Roach may have recorded the most compelling debut record of the year… “Charcoal Lane” is astonishing.” Guardian 29th July 1992
“Powerful, emotional and ultimately triumphant.’ The Age, Green Guide
‘Archie Roach is the most important Australian songwriter of our era.’ Adelaide Advertiser.
‘Archie Roach is easing the pain of his people… with songs that will break your heart.’ HQ
Whilst the awards never stopped coming for Roach – most recently he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal – and ‘Took The Children Away’ was entered into the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA)’s prestigious ‘Sounds of Australia’ register – the succession of albums that begun with ‘Charcoal Lane’ was momentarily halted in 2010 with the death of his wife and singer-songwriter Ruby Hunter, and his subsequent stroke and battle with lung cancer.
This 25th anniversary double CD release includes the remastered version of the original album together with a second disc including 5 acoustic tracks recorded live for Triple J’s ‘Live at the Wireless’ in 1990, and some new recordings of Charcoal Lane material.
