Location: Maleny Community Centre,
Argentinean Film Festival to show at Maleny
The first ever Argentinean Film Festival to be held in Australia opens at the Maleny Community Centre on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 August. The Consulate General of the Republic of Argentina and Caloundra City Council are sponsors of this great 2-day event which will open at to the sounds of a tango fiesta with live orchestra and the taste of tapas. The award-winning film, Live in Maid will screen on Friday night.Saturday's feast of films will commence and run all day in two 'cinemas' at the community centre. The closing film, Bombon El Perro - a film about a man and a dog set in the wilds of Patagonia - will be screened at on Saturday night.
Most of the films to be screened at the festival are unlikely to be seen elsewhere in Australia. The films try to make sense of peoples lives following Argentina's economic debacle of the 1990s which left no one untouched. As the middle class was brought to its knees, people found themselves face-to-face with others who had always done without, sometimes with surprising results.
Against this background, four of the eight films on show are comedies.Corazon de Fuego is a family friendly film about 3 men and a small boy who hijack a beautiful old locomotive destined to be sold to Hollywood. Buena Vida Delivery is an Argentine version of 'Meet the Parents' where they actually movie into the house! The Take - a doco produced in Canada - turns the globalization debate on its head. Another serious and important film, Raymundo, has been sent to Maleny following its recent screening at the Quad Theatre in New York.It is the story of a young filmmaker who, after returning to Argentina from his Australian tour (finishing in Brisbane) in 1976 was thrown into goal, tortured and killed.
The films screen in the quaint community centre hall, in the heart of Maleny. Don't expect gold-leaf comfort, but you will get a cushion for you chair and the bar and Argentine-style food will help ease both the mind and the body.
