Speakers from the Queensland Asbestos Related Disease Support Society ("QARDSS") and the Society's solicitor, Mr
The event is being hosted by the Queensland Asbestos Related Disease Support Society to provide information to the community about asbestos disease. Mr Blundell will inform the seminar about compensation issues relating to James Hardie and a person's monetary entitlements for their asbestos condition.

QARDSS has a number of members in Hervey Bay and surrounding areas and one of the purposes of the seminar is to raise awareness and help people identify if they are in fact suffering from an ARD - that is to say there is a possibility that there are more sufferers of ARD in the area that have not yet been identified.

WHAT IS QARDSS
History of QARDSS
The Queensland Asbestos Related Disease Support Society Incorporated ("QARDSS") was established in 1992 and has over the years grown to a current membership of over 600 people and businesses although many hundreds of QARDSS members have died since establishment. In the period since its formation the services provided by QARDSS have improved significantly and been made available on a far larger scale to deal with the worsening problem of asbestos disease in
q QARDSS believes that people with asbestos diseases should receive the best possible:
§ medical attention;
§ legal advice; and,
§ emotional support.
q To provide professional and specialist assistance to those who develop diseases due to asbestos, particularly people exposed in employment, and to assist their families to cope with their illness.
q To carry out programmes which are designed to contribute to the elimination of poverty and the promotion of well being to disadvantaged and vulnerable individuals and their families who, as a result of contracting asbestos diseases, are suffering economic or social hardship.
q To support and encourage the establishment of a national register of people who have contracted asbestos diseases.
q To disseminate information on asbestos, the consequences of its use and measures which can be taken to prevent asbestos diseases. This includes visiting worksites and making presentations to workers, employers and the general public about the dangers of asbestos.
q To encourage and support research into the treatment, prevention and cure of asbestos diseases.
QARDSS Activities and Services
The activities and services provided by QARDSS include but are not limited to:
q Asbestos Information and Support Centre at
q Milton Clarke House - the house is owned and operated by QARDSS. People who live outside the

q Convenes five General Meetings per year in
q Convenes five Management Committee Meetings per year in
q Produces and distributes more than 600 newsletters five times per year to members and supporters;
q Organises a major Asbestos Seminar every second year;
q Conducts an Ecumenical Church Service in November of each year;
q Organises monthly social activities through the "Friends of QARDSS" social and support group gatherings on the North and South of Brisbane, and at
q Produces and reviews asbestos information materials including an Asbestos Brochure;
q Lodging of submissions to Queensland and New South Wales Government Departments - for improvements in Workers Compensation, Asbestos Regulations and Advisory Standards and the listing of new asbestos disease treatment drugs to be placed on the pharmaceutical benefits list;
q Provides guest speakers for union meetings (eg ETU, CEPU), worksites, service clubs (Rotary, Lions etc) and other interested organisations;
q Maintains the QARDSS Website (www.asbestos-disease.com.au);
q Campaigns for more stringent asbestos control measures for workers and the general public;
q Campaigns for improvements to the compensation system;
q Campaigns for the listing of new asbestos cancer treatment drugs on the pharmaceutical benefits list.
q Funds asbestos research into the treatment and care of sufferers of asbestos disease, as well as the needs of their carers and families.
q QARDSS visits members in hospital, coordinates doctor's appointments and facilitates home services eg. Blue Care, palliative care services.
The services provided by QARDSS are made possible by a team of dedicated volunteers. QARDSS does not employ paid staff and is totally funded by membership subscriptions, donations and fundraising activities. It is registered as a charitable organisation and has been granted tax exemption. Financial donations over $2.00 are tax deductible.
