In the Shadow of the Golden Pagoda
A Biography of Gillian (Byrd) Boyer
In Patricia Young's new biography In the Shadow of the Golden Pagoda Mary Valley local Gillian Boyer reflects upon her adventurous life and her imminent and tortuous upheaval (yet again) to make way for the infamous Traveston Crossing Dam.
Recalled in vignettes, we are transported to 1930s China where Gillian's birth 'In the Shadow of the Golden Pagoda' foretells a long and lucky life.
Gillian's early years in the Jewel of the East are charmed. The sounds, smells and tastes of Chinese culture and village life are brought vividly to life. The arrival of her baby sister however coincides with the outbreak of WWII. Gillian's father is arrested then imprisoned by the Japanese, and curfews, food shortages and the constant threat of arrest haunt their lives.
Patricia Young paints lucid pictures of the trials the expatriates and local Chinese faced. The post-war years see the family journey to unfamiliar territory when they are firstly repatriated to England, then move to politically turbulent Africa where Gillian begins her nursing training and meets her future husband.
Gillian Boyer's recollections are lively and peppered with insights about the people and places she's lived. The prevailing customs, attitudes and political climate of a particular time and place are explored with sensitivity and meticulously researched by Patricia Young. A sensitive and perceptive story is created of this tumultuous time in modern world history.
'In the Shadow of the Golden Pagoda' will bring many memories flooding back to readers who have lived through these times personally or have family who have shared similar experiences. This is an honest and courageous recollection by an inspirational individual and a talented new author.
Patricia Young and Gillian Boyer will hold an author event on at 10.30 am, Sunday September 28 on the common outside the Noosa Regional Library. Patricia and Gillian will bring along their Dexter Cattle and speak of their memories and experiences in writing the biography.
This is a wonderful event for all the family to share experiences of a turbulent time and enjoy the many memories these wonderful women can share.
