RADIO SHOWS RE-LIVED
This weekend the "back to radio days" show at The Indee at Eumundi is a double package. To open the program ABC Coast FM's breakfast presenter John Stokes comperes Pick-a-Box. This is a reinvention of the legendary Bob Dyer quiz show which started on radio in 1948 and which, after nearly a decade, transferred to tv in 1957, running through till 1971.
Contestants will be drawn from the audience to vie for "the money or the box" and there are some terrific prizes on offer. Pick-a-Box was the longest running, top rating, radio quiz show ever to hit the air waves.
The second half of the program is a re-creation of the Lux Radio Theatre, with an adaptation of Dasheill Hammett's The Maltese Falcon. It features a mix of radio and theatre personalities, including (from theatre) Eddie Ellis, Rita Walker, Luke Lanham and Carine Bail and (from radio) ABC Coast FM breakfast presenter, John Stokes, the ABC's Bob Stuart and 4GY's Nathan Evans.
Shows at 7.30 this Friday and Saturday (22nd & 23rd) and 2 o'clock Sunday 24th. The Independent Theatre at Eumundi. Tickets $20, concessions and Sunday $18. Book 5472 8200

It's dress for the show, sartorial splendour onstage, when The Maltese Falcon opens this Friday (22nd) at 7.30 at The Indee. This nostalgia trip back to the early 50s when radio was still king and across Australia listeners were glued to their sets each week for the Sunday night drama, runs for three performances only.
It's a chance to see ABC Coast FM breakfast star, John Stokes, in his first dramatic role, as he plays villain, Joel Cairo (the part played by Peter Lorre in the movie). Also in the radio contingent is Coast FM's Bob Stuart and 4GY's Nathan Evans. The theatre side is represented by Rita Walker, Eddie Ellis, Carine Bail and Luke Lanham. Live sound effects will be performed onstage by Josh Bird (doors opening and closing, footsteps and bodies falling etc).
The Indee proudly recreates the Sunday night Lux Radio Theatre, heard first over the Macquarie Radio Network (out of 2GB) and later over the Major Network (out of 2UW). The Maltese Falcon was first performed on the American Lux Radio Theatre and was 'guest directed' by Cecil B DeMille and starred Edward G. Robinson - it is an adaptation of the classic film starring Humphrey Bogart, Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet.
The first half of the show will be a revival of Bob Dyer's Pick-a-Box, compered by John Stokes and featuring the familiar "money or the box" format, where contestants drawn from the audience will vie for some very good prizes.
