On 2 October 2009 UNESCO recognised Javanese batik as an item of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. To celebrate this the Gallery brings together two batik collections: one of batiks from the North Coast of Java and the other now held as memory and represented in the recent paintings by contemporary Indonesian artist Dadang Christanto (now resident in Brisbane).
