Ben Winkelman Trio, winner of the AIR award for 'Best Independent Jazz Release 2007' will indulge Noosa with their contemporary jazz rhythms in a one-night-only show at the J on May 23 at 8pm.

Ben started learning the piano as a child and after completing a music degree at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1994, he spent a 6 month sojourn in Barcelona performing with his trio at the Pipa Club. On his return to Melbourne, he began exploring some other musical styles like Cuban music, drum and bass, techno, klezmer, tango and had some success with the pioneering "live electronica" group Ping, with whom he played many of the major Australian festivals and toured the east coast. In the meantime he kept developing his jazz playing and spent some time studying Bach with John O'Donnell. In 2003 Ben went to New York to undertake further study with Sam Yahel, Harold Mabern, George Cables, Barry Harris and Sonny Bravo.

Today the Ben Winkelman trio's repertoire consists entirely of original compositions, some of which are modern reinterpretations of stride and early jazz; others are based on Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms; some incorporate elements of Argentinean tango and contemporary classical music. The result is a dynamic and exciting meeting between the traditional and the innovative and a balance between the structure of arrangements and the freedom of improvisation. These elements come together to form a sound that is unique and refreshing in Australian jazz which has been welcomed by Australia with enthusiastic reviews: "Just when we thought everything possible with jazz piano trios had been done, this Melbourne trio's debut album forces a rethink," said John McBeath in The Australian.

The appearance at the J in Noosa follows an Australian tour and shows in New Zealand, New Caledonia and China.  The stylish surrounds and state-of-the-art acoustics at The J will provide the ideal environment to experience the Ben Winkelman Trio. Tickets for this licensed event are available from the j on 5455 4455 for $25 pre-sold or $29 at the door. The bar at The J will open from 7pm for pre show drinks.
