LEIGH SEDLEY LEADS SUNSHINE COAST CHARGE
May 21st and 22nd sees the Billabong QCC head to the Sunshine Coast for the 3rd round of the six event series, the Billabong Coolum Classic. Presented by Coolum Boardriders and Surfing Queensland, Sunshine Coast surfers are looking to dominate the first event in the Billabong QCC on the Sunshine Coast. Quite a few Sunshine Coasters will be looking towards grabbing the $2,000.00 first prize and maximum ratings points towards the Billabong QCC Series, with the winner of the series not only collecting the Queensland Title, but a wildcard to the trials at the first WCT event of 2006 the Gold Coast.
No surfer will be keener for a win than Maroochydore's, Leigh Sedley, who after a successful World Qualifying Series (WQS) campaign in Australia, Europe, and the US is currently 14th on the WQS and looking to qualify for the elite World Championship Tour. Sedley would love the $2,000.00 to help him continue with his charge on the WQS, and with his current form shapes as one of the favourites to take out the event.
Although the WQS is Sedley's focus, he is looking forward to competing in the Billabong Coolum Classic, "It's great to have an event at home, and I will use this for practice for the WQS and trying some different strategies"
Sedley also knows the Billabong Coolum Classic will be no easy contest to win, "It is a pretty tough event, and I will have to be on my guard, half the guys in it could make the quarter-finals or semi-finals of a WQS"
Current Billabong QCC Series leader Luke Jory will be another surfer that is on short odds, posting a 3rd place in the last event of the series, and finishing in the top five in the Billabong QCC for the last 3 years. The tall Noosa natural footer will have a crew of Coolum locals to contend with as well, Mitch Semple as the defending Billabong Coolum Classic champion will be looking to make it two wins in a row and increase his rating on the Billabong QCC.
Coolum Boardriders will have a strong presence, former QCC champions Dave Reardon-Smith and Trevor Tripcony hungry for victory, and other Coolum surfers like young-gun Julian Wilson and red-hot locals Scott Mitchell and Sol Pans always capable of an upset, especially at their home break. Coolum have nominated junior club member, 16-year-old Rainbow Beach surfer Noah Lane as their wildcard into the seeded part of the draw. Lane is a real up and coming talent, and the young goofy-footer will relish having a shot at the older more experienced surfers in the Billabong QCC.
Surfers from the Gold Coast and Byron will be out for the dollars and ratings points as well. Former WCT surfer Shane Wehner, plus Yerin Brown, Jarred Sullivan, and Beau Walker from Byron Bay will be there to take the cash south of the border. Gold Coast surfers like defending Billabong QCC champion Samba Mann, Billabong Alley Classic winner Damon Harvey, and Billabong Creek to Creek Classic winner Josh Fuller will be looking to increase their position on the Billabong QCC ratings and take the $2,000.00 back to the Gold Coast.
The event is mobile on the Sunshine Coast, but organizers will be looking to hold the event in the Coolum area. Entries are still available, and can be obtained by contacting Surfing Queensland on 07 55201165 or entry forms can be downloaded from www.surfingqueensland.com .
