Nick Enright's thought provoking and challenging play 'Blackrock' opens at Noosa Arts, Weyba Rd on Thursday 4 March for a two week season. 'Blackrock' is probably the most penetrating and authentic theatrical insight into the world of Australian teenagers. Harrowing in parts, this play gives the audience a new understanding of the dilemmas of many young people and of their relationships.
Noosa Arts is fortunate to have gifted young actors to play the teenage roles, such as Beau Stegert, who won best young performer of 2003 at the Sunshine Coast STAR awards. The adult cast of Stephen Moore, Jenni McCaul, Eileen Walder, Rhonda Oldfield, and Sharyn Domain complete an impressive line up of talent to convey the powerful drama of the devastating impact of a brutal rape and murder on a small coastal community. Multi Award winning Jane Rivers is directing the production.
When author, Nick Enright, died of cancer last year, there was a flood of tributes attesting to his extraordinary intelligence and insight as a playwright. He was also brilliant teacher who could really connect with young people and loved working with them. The themes and emotions of 'Blackrock' continue to resonate with teenagers and their parents and it one of the set texts for study in high schools this year.
Both the play and film version stirred controversy and evoke every parent's worst nightmare. The play contains coarse language and is not suitable for children. Enright, however, handles his subject matter with great tact.
