funny, heartbreaking, wonderful...
Set in 1984 in the tiny community of New Zealand's coastal Waihau Bay. This is the domain of eleven-year old Boy (James Rolleston), who lives on a farm with his grandma. Left on his own, not only to care for his brother Rocky, but also a brood of younger cousins when Grandma goes away to a funeral, his life is turned upside down by the unexpected appearance of his long absent father.
Having envisaged his dad as everything from a war hero to a rugby God, Boy must now contend with the reality of a doped-out, low-end crim who is only in town to dig up a sack of loot that he buried years ago.
Boy idealises his father, finds a dope plantation that feeds into his father's proclivities and has conversations with his goat and sometimes with his brother Rocky. A delightful film that manages to counterbalance the sly humour of an out of control Dad with the aspirations of his children.
