BRIBES, ASH G COLLABS AND STEVEN SEAGAL MARATHONS: Beats VS The Funkoars
Aussie Party Act Hits the Road
On the verge of finally dropping their 5th full length studio album Mad as Hell, your friendly neighbourhood Funkoars are venturing back out of their caves and deep into your hearts. The kings of questionable content are mid way through a 12 date national tour taking in VIC, NSW, QLD, WA, ACT and SA and are joined by Birdz on the road.
The next release is a throw back to the band's earliest material, delivered over signature drum sounds and a heap of funk... what you'd expect from ARIA award-winning producer Trials (Hilltop Hoods, Seth Sentry, Drapht) and an act boasting 16 years of experience and confidence in all things crass.
We had a chance to have a chat with Dan from Funkoars before their show at Friday Live at The Helm in Mooloolaba this week.
You're up at The Helm this Friday, when was the last time you came to the Sunshine Coast? Any memories of the area or local punters?
We came for a cheeky visit last year and almost every year before that since early 2000's, always one of our favourite places to perform and end up somewhere dark with our feet in the water freaking out ahaha. The crowd is always perfect for our live show, hella energetic and excited to get involved which is great otherwise we'd look stupider than usual doing call and response stuff to ourselves.
'Mad as Hell' will be your next full length studio album and your fifth in total. That's a decent haul. How do you maintain longevity in such a shifting industry?
Mostly bribes and having heaps of dirt on high up executives... that and thankfully being in it for the right reasons I reckon. We started making music to make each other laugh and i think that's been a constant in all our releases. The day it stops being fun is the day I think we'll wrap it up and start pumping out the dance remixes.
What can we expect/not expect from the live show on Friday night? Haven't seen you guys live yet but your live name certainly proceeds you!
You can expect lots and lots of sweat and then we'll start rapping. That and a truly wild line up, Birdz & Grey Yard just kill it and we're joined by turntable royalty as always with DJ TOTAL ECLIPSE rocking with us. Seeing E rock in the flesh is worth it alone AND it's his birthday!
You worked with one of our faves Ash Grunwald a while back. Any new collaborations in the works as part of the new album?
Yeah, Ash is actually all over this record. I think he's played on 6-7 tunes in total and lent some vocals to 2-3. We recorded the majority of this one in Brisbane actually and getting Ashius Clay involved is always a no brainer.
Your presser says that you'll be making my Nanna nervous. How exactly do you achieve that? She's kind of seen it all...
After the show we'll be inviting the crowd to join us in our hotel for a Steven Segal marathon the size of which is unheard of out side of Steven Segals house. if that doesn't make her think twice her steely resilience is well respected.
This will be a fun one!
