Tewantin Butts to be hunted Friday 13th February 2009
The Butt Hunters will be out and about again on Friday the 13th this time focusing on Poinciana Ave Tewantin, with the mission of ridding our township of cigarette butts. The Butt Hunters are part of the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association's Stormwater and Waste Wise program that is funded by Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
Did you know there are 4.5 TRILLION butts littered in the world every year! As soon as they hit the stormwater drains and become wet they leach a myriad of toxic chemicals such as nicotine, pyrene, cadmium, Benzene, Formaldehyde, acetone, lead and arsenic into our marine environment which is disastrous to our marine wildlife. There are actually over 165 chemicals in cigarettes, its estimated butts take 2-25 years to break down in our environment.
According to the Center for Marine Conservation, cigarette butt litter accounts for one in every five items collected on cleanups, making it the most prevalent form of litter ON EARTH. With "Clean up Australia Day" around the corner we urge people to do the right thing.
The NICA team "Butt Hunters" aim to address the world's worst litter problem by raising awareness and giving out free personal ashtrays. To date NICA have handed out over 3000 personal ashtrays. Smokers who are made aware of the litter problem are most cooperative in disposing of their cigarette litter properly. Dropped cigarette butts have been the cause of house and apartments fires, as well as some of the largest and most destructive forest fires. Fires caused by cigarette butts claim the lives of about 1,000 people and injure about 3,000 people each year.
If you would like to get active for a cleaner greener Noosa, please come along and join NICA project officers, Tara Kingsbury and Wendy May.
