Helping local business to be carbon tax-ready

Will this mean even more paperwork for my business?
How will it affect the prices I pay and set?
How do I explain its impact to my customers?
Will 1 July 2012 provide certainty for my business?

These are just a few questions that some of the Coast’s 34,500 businesses might be asking themselves, following the passage of the carbon tax legislation through Federal Parliament last week.
But the answers could be only a workshop away.
“Sunshine Coast Council has been carbon tax-ready for some time now - but we want to do what we can to help local businesses to be in a similar position,” council’s Economic Development Portfolio Councillor Lew Brennan said.
“So council has invited a recognised authority on the implications for business of a carbon tax to host free workshops and to answer some of the pressing questions for business owners.
“BDO Australia is an independent and globally recognised leader in carbon accounting and Partner Dylan Byrne will take you through the steps to ensure your business is carbon tax-ready,” Cr Brennan said.
Cr Brennan said this was not about the politics of the carbon tax – but about how we can assist local business to prepare for what is now part of the law of Australia.
“These workshops will not argue the merits or otherwise of a carbon tax; what is more important right now, is that we do what we can to assist local businesses understand what it means and explore where there may be opportunities to improve their business opportunities,” he said.
Mr Byrne will provide
•    An overview of the government’s Clean Energy Future plan;
•    An introduction to some general small to medium enterprises (SME)-related issues arising from the carbon tax, including potential opportunities, costs and benefits and additional business risks;
•    Some industry-specific aspects of the plan and how to apply these outcomes to the Sunshine Coast; and
•    Some practical considerations for businesses to apply including identifying opportunities and risks, and adapting your plans around the carbon tax.
