Coast twilight lifeguard challenge returns
The fitness and skill of the Coast's three professional lifeguard services will be challenged this week at the 2nd Annual Sunshine Coast Twilight Lifeguard Challenge.
Sunshine Coast Beach and Water Safety Committee Chairman, Maroochy Councillor Bruce Dunne, said the annual challenge was an opportunity for the professional lifeguards from across the Coast to have some fun and let off some steam after a busy summer.
"The lifeguards are very serious about what they do and how they do it," Cr Dunne said.
"As well as the informal challenge, these professionals use the occasion to update each other about their experiences over the busy summer holidays.
"This is also a great time to discuss any ideas about potential improvements to our lifeguard services that will help ensure our beaches remain safe and of great enjoyment to all users."
The Maroochy Shire Lifeguard Service will be split into north and south regions (north and south of Maroochy River) and will compete against the Noosa Shire Lifeguard Service and Caloundra City Lifeguard Service in the twilight challenge this Friday from 5.15pm at Mooloolaba Beach.
The challenge will comprise of five races, including a board rescue, tube rescue, team swimming race, board relay and will conclude with the lifeguard relay.
This year, in a special twist to the challenge, Maroochy Councillors Chris Thompson and Bruce Dunne will join the Lifeguard Relay team event, competing against each other's teams as well as those of Noosa Councillor Russell Green and Caloundra City Councillor Tim Dwyer.
Everyone is encouraged to come along and observe the tremendous skill and fitness of the Coast's professional lifeguards and cheer for their favourite team.
