Printmaking workshop series to start off 2011

To kick off the new year, why not learn a fun, new artistic technique or renew your skills with two adult printmaking workshop series.
This month Sunshine Coast Council is running a Collagraph Printmaking Workshop and Copper Sulphate Etching Printmaking Workshop at the Caloundra Regional Gallery and the Maleny Arts and Crafts Group, Maleny Showgrounds respectively.
Collagraph Printmaking Workshop
When:    Tuesday 11 January 2011 from 9am to 2pm
Where:  Caloundra Regional Gallery
The collagraph is a printing technique, where the image is composed of a variety of materials (different textures) glued onto a piece of board or metal plate. The plate is shellaced several times then inked up. This method of printing is called intaglio, where the ink is pushed into every crevice of the plate then carefully wiped back, and run through a press.
Printed collagraphs are an inexpensive method of printing and very accessible. Easy enough to do on your kitchen table, they can be as bold or as subtle as you like. From fine lines to beautiful textures, it's extremely addictive and has endless possibilities.
The workshop is suitable for beginners through to experienced artists who want to explore some more. Different materials and techniques will be experimented with, which will then be implemented into a final piece of artwork.
Bring:   Two sheets of printing paper (any kind 150-250 gsm), apron, closed shoes and ideas...drawings and a notebook, pencil, masking tape, Stanley knife, scissors, disposable rubber gloves.
Collect in a box: tissue papers, textured paper, old wallpapers, lace (fine), paper doilies, feathers, leaves, sandpaper (fine), alfoil dry flat leaves, dry flowers, bark, eggshells, old photos to cut up.

Copper Sulphate Etching Printmaking Workshop
When:  Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 January 2011 from 9am to 4pm
Where:   Maleny Arts and Crafts Group, Maleny Showgrounds
What:    Copper Sulphate etching.......So much safer than acid and much less expensive with aluminium plates!
One of the great reasons for printing, is you get to make multiple copies of your image. You can reinterpret a painting or drawing in  print form and take it that much further. Prints are more accessible to people, because they are usually sold at a less expensive price than a number of other artworks, such as a painting for example.
The printing process can be highly addictive, with surprises in store and new things to be learned every time you pull a print from a plate.
Bring:   Gloves, apron, drawings, scribe (sharp tool), file. If you have any rubber rollers please bring these with you (optional).
Tea and Coffee supplied - just bring a plate to share for lunch.
Cost:           $150
Booking:        To make a booking phone 5420 8299 or email

Both workshops will be facilitated by renowned print artist / tutor Victoria Atkins, a member of 'Press Gang' printmakers, Wallace House, Noosa.
