Traffic taming talks rev up in Coolum

Safety on and around local roads is of paramount importance to the Coolum community and residents from a number of streets experiencing pressure are invited to tackle traffic issues at a special workshop this weekend.
Division 9 Councillor Vivien Griffin said residents would have the chance to discuss local traffic problems and solutions at the Coolum Civic Centre from 11am to 1pm on Saturday, 13 November.
"Traffic calming is a critical issue in a number of areas in Coolum including Hewitt Street, Cinnamon Avenue, School Road, Park Crescent and Banksia Avenue," she said.
"The need for traffic calming measures along these key corridors was raised with me in the 2008 election campaign, and I have not forgotten my commitment to tackle these issues.
"I have secured $100,000 in the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 capital works budgets for traffic calming measures and I want to begin rolling out new traffic calming measures from July next year.
"To ensure council is able to do this its imperative that we consult with residents and gain their feedback on the problems and issues they are currently experiencing.
"We will conduct traffic counts to gain an insight into the nature of the traffic movements in these streets and support safe pedestrian and bike rider access, particularly in connection with the local school."
"Once council has gathered community feedback we can develop draft proposals and re-submit those to residents for their consideration."
Cr Griffin said residents could drop into Saturday's workshop at any time between 11am and 1pm to provide their feedback.
"Residents who can't attend on Saturday can still have their say on these important traffic issues by contacting my office on (07) 5420 8975 or emailing me at," she said.
