June 20th, 2007  Music Mentoring Success Story

Two young graduates of Noosa Council's immensely successful  Music Mentoring programme will be off to the United Kingdom later in the year, planning to play their way around England for 12 months.

With one CD already under their belt (thanks to a Regional Arts Development Fund grant), Kris De Waard and Dan Everett will be staying with friends who have contacts in the industry and hope to help them break into the English music scene.

Fellow musician and Mayor Bob Abbot met the pair today, delighted that the Creative Noosa project is producing young performers of such calibre and confidence.

"Music Mentoring takes off again during the June/July holidays," said Cr Abbot, "launching on June 25th with two weeks of Advanced Audio Recording Studios workshops and a performance at The J.  This will provide with an opportunity for band members to try a solo or duo, try their hand at another instrument or sing instead of drum.  Solos will also have the opportunity of backing - each being recorded as a demo for their collection.  Registrations for this workshop must be filed by June 15th."

Project Officer Vanessa Doolan says would-be rock gods have a mine of information available to them on the creative careers webpage of Council's website :    "It includes details of filming/music workshops during the September October school holidays, running from September 22nd to October 7th," said Ms Doolan.

"These will cover advanced techniques in filming, such as camera placement and using equipment, rather than editing.   Participants will include :

• young actors from the Cooran Youth Theatre Group, producing and performing a short film;

• young film makers working under the guidance of James Muller of Earthbase Productions; and

• young musicians, writing a theme song for the movie, in workshops with songwriter/composer Leah Barclay.

"The Creative Careers website also has registration forms for next January's music camp, tentatively scheduled for Yandina's Maranatha Recreation Camp, between January 14th and 18th."
