On Sunday 13 December Meghan Halverson, President of Queensland Koala Crusaders, will be making a grand gesture to raise awareness and funds in support of the koala.
Meghan will be cutting 70 centimetres from her waist-length hair (representing the seven years she has been living in Australia and contributing to koala conservation) to help raise a deposit for a koala refuge in the Noosa region - a place free from dogs, disease and development, which have been the major contributors to the species’ declining numbers.
The Crusaders are looking to close the gap on an immediate goal to raise $25,000.
Koalas are an iconic species, but are at risk of localised extinction on the Sunshine Coast, which was once a stronghold for them. Queensland Koala Crusaders is a charitable organisation that works to create awareness of the threats to the koala, to activate local koala conservation initiatives and promote education about our unique fauna more broadly.
The “Crop for Koalas” is being kindly supported by Smyths Hairdressing. Smyth’s team of highly skilled hair stylists jumped on board to support the koala cause, when they learned of Meghan’s quest.
The event also includes musical entertainment, with performances by local artists Gary Shepherd, Ayla Scanlan, Ebony Hamacek, Ryan Tracey and Val N Tino.
