Gympie High students were treated to a showcase of talent from their peers this week as heats concluded in preparation for the school’s talent quest final to be held at Hamilton Hall on October 25. The six finalists for the talent quest will help raise funds for the year 12 project to sponsor a child through Destiny Rescue, the not-for-profit organisation which saves children from human trafficking and the sex slave industry in Asian countries.

School captain Sophie Price and her fellow student executive initiated the project with the intent that it continues as an ongoing year 12 commitment. “We wanted to do something to make a difference and create a legacy for the school students to carry on after we graduate, and by using a talent quest as our primary fundraiser, we’ve been able to incorporate the whole school into this great project,” Sophie said. “The school has previously supported Destiny Rescue, and the founder of the organisation Tony Kirwan comes from the Sunshine Coast, so it’s nice to have that local connection when we’re trying to make a difference for people so far away.”

“We’ve had great support from the community, with a $250 recording voucher from Blue Logic Studios, two VIP passes to Movie World and a $50 Myer voucher donated as prizes for the talent quest. Local businesses that have also provided raffle items include Sunshine Mitre 10 in Gympie.”

The talent quest will begin at 6.30pm at Hamilton Hall on Friday October 25, with judges Joel Forman from local band Red Beard, Lee Turner from Blue Logic Studios and teachers John Fletcher and Michelle Peters. There will also be a guest performer on the night. Entry is $5, and food and drink will be available, with all funds going towards the sponsorship of a child. Raffle tickets in a multi-draw will also be available.

“We encourage everyone to come along and help us support someone less lucky than we are, as well as enjoying a great night of entertainment.”
