On April 21, 2013 Surfrider Foundation Sunshine Coast in partnership with the picitup campaign (www.picitup.com.au) will be heading to Double Island Point to clean up land and sea debris near Freshwater from 10am-12:30 pm.
Volunteer’s traveling from the Sunshine Coast will be departing at 8:30 am from Tickle Park, Coolum Beach. Everyone, including locals will meet at 10am at the Freshwater camping ground.
Double Island Point is the main natural prone area in the Cooloola region as it is a tourist beach, with only 4WD access. Only 15km south of the lighthouse is a 15km stretch of the beach which campers are able to stay close to the dunes. This is the area that will be cleaned up over the weekend. With Easter holidays having just finished, this will be the perfect opportunity to clean up natural and human debris.
Surfrider Foundation Sunshine Coast has been supporting the picitup campaign in the fight to rid the waterways of natural and man-made pollution.
‘Not only are these bags constantly re-used, they are am important tool to empower communities to continue collecting marine debris from our coastlines,’ says Sally Atkinson, President of Surfrider Foundation.
Not only is the day dedicated to starting the clean up of a notorious debris zone it is also a day of promoting the hopeful beginnings of another Surfrider Foundation branch in the Cooloola region.
If anyone is keen on helping with the Double Island Point clean up and/or have a 4WD and are happy to car pool, it not only be a fulfilling day of helping mother nature but also in a fun way. If that isn’t enough to tempt a free community barbeque will be available for volunteers at the Freshwater camping ground.
The Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG) (www.bmrg.org.au/) has funded the picitup bags. BMRG is a body of volunteers who represent the combined interest of the community, industry and government in the planning and implementation of natural resource management programs in the Burnett Mary region. Cleanwater Constructions (www.cleanwaterconstructions.com.au) is providing support to volunteers, on the day, as well as providing the community BBQ (put corporate weblinks in)
