Fish think tanks to seek recreational view

Are you a recreational fisher? If so, the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries wants to hear from you.

DPI&F is holding a series of think tanks throughout Queensland in April to discuss how to communicate more effectively with recreational fishers.

Minister for Primary Industries and Fisheries Tim Mulherin encouraged fishers to take part in the think tanks to help DPI&F better target its communication and education activities.

"The focus groups will discuss what sort of information recreational fishers want and where they access it," Mr Mulherin said.

"For example, we want to know how often they check fishing rules and where they go to find this information. Do they use the internet, fishing guides or bait and tackle shops?"

Mr Mulherin said DPI&Fs' range of communication tools and products such as the website and recreational fishing guide would also be critiqued and examined.

"We want to attract a cross section of the community, particularly those who fish for fun but do not have the level of knowledge that avid recreational fishers have," he said.

"This will help to refine and refocus our communication tools and practices and ensure we are getting information to all members of the recreational fishing community, not just those 'in the know'.''

Mr Mulherin said an online survey had also been developed to value-add to the feedback from the think tanks.

"I encourage anyone who has an interest in recreational fishing to complete the survey," he said.

"This is important information that will ultimately benefit the recreational fishing community and DPI&F."

The survey can be accessed through the DPI&F website at ww.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb
