DSAQ will be running a family camp at Alexandra Headlands at the Alex Park Conference Centre from the 1-3 of August 2008. We are desperately looking for volunteers to work with the children. The camp is designed to give parents an opportunity to attend information workshops, get to know other members and provide a level of respite in a relaxed environment. Volunteers will need to register for a Disability Services Card and we are able to do this once they have contacted us (at no cost to them).

Information for Volunteers

People with Down syndrome constitute the single largest group of people with an intellectual disability, with the syndrome occurring once in every 800 live births.  This, therefore, constitutes a significant group in the community.

Having Down syndrome does not define who people are.  It is an attribute not a deficit.  People with Down syndrome have unique personalities, abilities, skills and interests.  Although the syndrome is associated with developmental delays and learning difficulties, how 'disabling' these are depends as much on community attitudes and support as it does on an individual's level of ability.

The Down Syndrome Association of Queensland (DSAQ) Inc. was formed as a self-help information and support group in 1976. It is a registered charity and a non-profit organisation that has traditionally relied almost completely on the efforts of volunteers.  DSAQ has more than 1000 members, including families and affiliate members (with multiple users) such as hospitals and schools throughout Queensland.  The DSAQ services are not limited to financial members and resources, information and support are requested on an ongoing basis from other interested persons, including teachers, doctors and service providers.

The Mission of the DSAQ is to support, advocate for and empower Queensland children and adults with Down syndrome, so they can be valued and contributing members of the community, as is their right.

The objectives of the DSAQ Inc. are:
 •  to support, encourage and inform people with Down syndrome and their family groups;
 •  to educate, inform and support health, educational and other professionals, students, support network members and the wider community;
 •  to be the representative body for issues relating to Down syndrome to government, service providers and other community organisations; and
 •  to stimulate and expand community recognition and awareness as to the individual rights, abilities and needs of people with Down syndrome.

Family information and support workshops covering a wide range of activities for all ages and all family members.

Parents will be attending workshops through out the day, covering three important aspects-
Session 1. Creating a vision,
Session 2. Information addressing the vision and
Session 3. How to bring the plan to fruition

Concurrently the Young Adult Program will run skill development and social sessions for the young adults with Down syndrome.

The younger children and siblings will be entertained with crafts, music, sporting games and other activities.

• Provide a relaxed environment for families to 're-connect', spend time together while learning essential skills.  Information & activities are to be designed for all family members - parents; people with Down syndrome and siblings.

• Provide an avenue of empowerment for families, by delivering accurate up-to-date information.

• Ensure that families in Regional and remote areas have the same opportunities as metropolitan families, to access necessary information.
• Ensure the continuing viability and quality of the existing state-wide services of the DSAQ, in particular, to enhance the organisations effectiveness in meeting the needs of families with a member with Down syndrome by providing enjoyable and educational workshops.
