ECO Kids EXPO 1 June 2005
On June 7th and 8th the Cooroy Memorial Hall will be transformed into a mini expo site when Noosa Shire environment groups and their local Council jointly present the Noosa Eco Kids Expo.
Noosa Shire school students will be able to hear about wildlife rescue, participate in a live game show called the Big Foot game or become Waterbug detectives.
Landcare will create a riparian habitat, complete with creatures from the Queensland Museum; there will be opportunities to learn more about recycling and participate in a recycling relay; travel downstream with the Noosa River Story and also check out what happens underground with the Stormwater is NOT Waste Water display.
On Wednesday the 8th Expo visiting students will be in for an extra treat : a street theatre performance from Sunshine Beach High School. Year 8 students from the school were lucky enough to be chosen to work with two very talented performance artists to put together a street theatre performance group to deal with the litter issue.
Di Mills has been helping students to make musical instruments from potential litter items as well as teaching body percussion, while Annette Schoenberger has been handling choreography and performance skills.
"The students have been working enthusiastically for many weeks towards this performance" says Ms. Mills. "These workshops, funded through the Regional Arts Development Fund, aim to address litter issue in schools through a positive and entertaining medium."
Students have been crafting some imaginative environmental entries for the poster competition. During the Expo, winners' names will be announced for the Paul Steels Landcare Award and the Noosa River Friendly School. Other awards will be announced in November, at the end of the school year.
Students are being asked to BYO a litter-free morning tea or lunch, with prizes to be awarded for the most innovative.
For those young people who miss out, for teachers or the merely curious, the Expo site will be open to the general public for two hours only, from 3.00 pm on Tuesday June 7th.
