Lifting the lid on recycling

During National Recycling Week, Sunshine Coast Council is throwing open the doors of its Education and Recycling Centre on November 15 in a bid to make the region's residents recycling smart.

Planet Ark's National Recycling week, 10 - 16 November is an annual campaign, encouraging Australian householders, businesses and schools to 'Recycle Right', helping save water, conserve resources and combat climate change.

Gerard Kavney, Manager of Maroochy Waste Management, said that Sunshine Coast residents, for the most part, do a fantastic job when it comes to recycling.

"What we are finding however is that people are putting recyclables into the waste bin and not the recycling bin. What this means is that valuable resources end up going to landfill," Mr Kavney said.

"There are a few simple rules to follow when recycling; if you are unsure check the information on your recycling bin, council's web site or contact council's Customer Service Centres. If you have any other questions or need more recycling space, residents are also encouraged to contact council.

"The Education and Recycling Centre tour is a real eye opener. You can see first hand the non-recyclables that come through the centre, for example car exhausts, stuffed toys, dinner plates. The major problem however, is the many plastic bags that come through each week.

"The center's processing facility is 95% automated, and when plastic bags come through, they tend to get caught in the system.

"Children love the tour; afterwards, they tend to become the 'recycling police' of the household. It's a great way to instill the recycling message early on.

"The Education and Recycling Centres are a great way to learn what to put in and what to leave out of your recycling bin. Residents attending the open day can collect recycling information including a sticker which clearly shows what items are suitable for recycling."
