This workshop is suitable for artists up to intermediate level who already have some experience in painting and drawing and would like to reach out and challenge their creativity through the use of mixed media.
Participants will develop work which is a blend of realism and abstraction. Exciting textures and patterns created using acrylics, impasto and collage and a sense of depth created using layers of transparent and opaque papers and washes will form the composition context.
A number of techniques and processes will be explored and tutor demonstrations given. The objective is for each participant to undertake a progression of exercises culminating in a satisfying finished work and for them to complete the workshop with an improved repertoire of creative skills.

Students bring own materials.
• A primed canvas 61cm X 51cm
• A selection of artist or good student quality acrylic paints.
• A pallet
• Charcoal sticks, 4B, 2B, HB graphite pencils and an eraser
• A pastry brush for gluing and a selection of brushes for acrylic painting.
• Pallet knife and wide toothed comb
• PVA glue (Ph neutral)
• Six disposable cup-sized containers
• A small bucket for water (about the size of a kid’s sand bucket)
• A roll of paper towel and an old rag or two

Because this workshop will be about the process of creating a mixed media work and not drawing and time is important, a selection of drawings in water resistant ink on white bond paper will be provided for you to collage as the central theme of your work. Which drawing you choose and the basic concept of your creation will be up to you, but please bring other materials you might like to use to give texture, contrast and interest, like brown paper, unryu papers, lace, string or crochet thread, gold leaf or anything you think might work. A detailed explanation and demonstration on how to use these materials will be given.
