Monday, July 17, 2006  Local councillors put priority on extended hours for libraries
Thanks to funding from local councillors, Caloundra City Council's Maleny and Beerwah Branch Libraries are extending their opening hours - and all are invited to join the free celebrations.
Caloundra City Mayor Don Aldous said he was delighted to see Divisional Councillors Dick Newman and Anna Grosskreutz provide such strong support for the "very popular" hinterland libraries.
"This is great news for those communities - there's such a strong demand for the wonderful services our libraries provide," Cr Aldous said.
Each Saturday from July 29, Beerwah Library, which previously shut at noon, will open from 9am to 3pm.  From August 2, Maleny Library will open on Wednesday mornings, with new hours of 9am to 5.30pm (previously 1.30pm to 5pm).
The extension of the Maleny service comes thanks to Councillor Dick Newman and at Beerwah it comes courtesy of Councillor Anna Grosskreutz. Both councillors allocated funding from their Councillor Priority Projects funding.
Beerwah's celebrations on Saturday July 29 will include a Teddy Bear Party, stories, face painting and balloons from 11.30am and cake cutting by Councillor Grosskreutz at noon.
Maleny will celebrate with a special morning tea at 10am on Wednesday August 2. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Cr Newman said the Maleny Branch Library provided an excellent range of services to its many members and was a great hub of community activity.
"I'm pleased to make a major contribution from my priority funding to such a valuable, well-utilised and much appreciated facility,'' Cr Newman said.
Cr Grosskreutz said surveys carried out at the Beerwah branch found its services were "definitely a high priority for the people of the GlassHouse Country Region".
"This multi-million facility is a great asset to our community and Council must continue to ensure it addresses the growing and ever-changing needs of our reading and learning communities,'' Cr Grosskreutz said.
