The last decade has seen an unprecedented boom in prices for Chinese art.  A tiny so-called 'chicken cup' sold for US$36m in Hong Kong and a vase that lurked beneath a kitchen sink sold in the UK for the equivalent of US$80m.  Even relatively modest pieces can achieve prices well into six figures.

However, many of the pieces appearing on the market are copies or worse are fakes created in order to deceive.  From porcelain vases and bowls to ink and colour scrolls, from ancient spearheads to snuff bottles and wooden votive pieces, the market is awash with imitative modern creations.

On Saturday 12 March, a highly respected lecturer in the field of Chinese Art will be visiting Noosa from the UK to give a talk to ADFAS Noosa members.  Paul Harris will talk about the perils of purchasing Chinese art and will display a few of his own mistakes to illustrate the complexity of establishing the authenticity of pieces.

Mr Harris collects and deals in modern Vietnamese art and Chinese Ming, Qing and Republic Period paintings, porcelain and furniture.  A professional writer and lecturer, he is the author of some 45 books.

Light refreshments will be served after the lecture.  Visitors welcome – bookings essential contact Sharon 5448 2394 (slhyde53@gmail.com).  A fee of $25 will be payable at the door.
