Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt), has taken on a high profile challenge with this new take on the classic Thomas Hardy novel. The novel made him a success in 1874, and has been filmed four times – the last was a telemovie in 1998 but the 1967 version, with Julie Christie, Alan Bates and Peter Finch is the best known.
The story centres on the young heroine, Bathsheba Everdene, who wants a man to sweep her off her feet but won’t sit there simpering and waiting around for this knight to arrive. At first, she is wooed by a loyal sheep farmer, Gabriel Oak. When Gabriel loses his source of income and no longer feels that he has much to offer, Bathsheba decides to run her farm herself. The prosperous local landowner, William Boldwood thinks that he can persuade Bathsheba they should combine their properties and their lives. This only propels Bathsheba into the arms of the caddish but dashing soldier, Frank Troy. All this we know is going to end badly.
“Thomas Vinterberg relishes the challenge of keeping all this timeless and contemporary.”
