Multicultural workshops, a festival hit!

In India, Africa and the Middle East, the art of painting the body from the crushed leaves of the henna plant has been practised for over five thousand years.

Henna has long been used to decorate the body for important occasions and celebrations, and what better time to give it a go yourself at FESTURI's Great Multicultural Celebration on Sunday August 30.

Workshop convenor, Gwen De Silva explains, "In the north of India, Mehendi is an important part of the wedding ceremony". "It is believed that the deeper the colour obtained on the skin, the longer the love between the couple will last and application of Mehendi is like a prayer for everlasting love and successful marriage", Gwen said.

Mehendi has become popular in the west because women like to decorate their bodies. The dye is temporary, so old designs fade and new designs can be made.

This wonderful workshop is only one of many that festival go-ers can participate in. Learn how to create your own beautiful and unique, vases with hand-painted designs, unlock the hidden mysteries of your fridge with traditional Asian vegetable and fruit carving, Festivale hat making, Steep Pan drumming and African drumming with Tribal Wave, Craft, Hand painting, Games, Learning Mother language & Filipino bamboo dancing as well as Flamenco Dance and Singing Workshop by International Artists 'Flamenco Fire'

These workshops are open to all ages and all skill levels! And they're free! Coordinated by the Maroochy Neighbourhood Centre's Multicultural Women's Group, these workshops have been funded by the

Sunshine Coast Regional Council & Arts QLD RADF Program.

Grab your program from the FESTURI information tent and join us for the Great Multicultural Celebration, Sunday August 30 from 10am -- 4pm at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
