High school students from across the Electorate of Fisher will be joined by Shadow Minister for Youth, Pat Farmer MP, to examine the binge drinking problem, Member for Fisher Peter Slipper said.
The Shadow Minister has confirmed his attendance at the inaugural Fisher Youth Forum at Kawana on July 28.
"Binge drinking is an unacceptable and dangerous social problem and those who indulge themselves in this way are taking a huge risk of possible life-long consequences," Mr Slipper said.
"It is vital that communities address youth binge drinking, in particular, to make sure our young people have the best chance of a successful future, without the burden of potential injury and harm that can result from senseless alcohol abuse," Mr Slipper said.
Students from 26 high schools in the area have been invited to attend the forum, which will feature speakers addressing the health, legal and social impacts of binge drinking. Key speakers are Professors John Lowe and Mary Katsikitis from the University of the Sunshine Coast, and Ms Sharon Beck from Buderim legal firm Carvosso Winship.
"It is important that young people have a direct say about an issue that can potentially impact on them and their friends, so I'm keen to hear their thoughts and suggestions for solutions," Mr Slipper said.
"It is also a real plus for the event that Pat Farmer is attending the Youth Forum; he is dedicated to the community and passionate about youth issues."
