Minister for Small Business, Information Technology Policy and Multicultural Affairs
The Honourable Chris Cummins

Small Business Minister Chris Cummins and the Member for Hervey Bay Andrew McNamara today encouraged Wide Bay businesses and individuals working in the aviation sector to attend three, free training programs.

Mr Cummins said the Beattie Government wanted to encourage further growth in Wide Bay aviation.

"There is no cost for attending these sessions, just people's time," he said.

The training will be conducted from 8am to 5pm at Outrigger, Hervey Bay, Buccaneer Drive, Urangan, as follows:

• Budgeting and Financial Management (two days) - 3 & 4 August 2006
• Managing People and Performance (one day) - 1 September 2006
• Strategic Business Marketing (2 days) - 17 -18 October 2006.

Mr Cummins said the Beattie Government was funding the free training, delivered by the Australian Institute of Management, to help local aviation businesses take advantage of the state's growing aviation and aerospace industry.

"Since coming to office in 1998, the Beattie Government has helped generate 6,000 new jobs in the aviation sector," he said.

"We've put a lot of effort into attracting major aviation industry companies to Queensland and the Premier recently announced $6.5 million funding to ensure continued growth of the sector.

"We are now a key centre for defence aerospace support, research and development, as well as aviation training and maintenance. With major companies coming here, a growing defence aviation presence and more scheduled air routes to Queensland, there are plenty of opportunities for local small and medium-sized businesses."

Mr McNamara said the aviation industry in the Wide Bay region was strongly focused on manufacturing and servicing with approximately 30 aviation related businesses located in the region.

"The region is home to all three Queensland based aircraft manufacturers - Seabird Aviation Australia, Jabiru and Dean Wilson Aviation. These companies provide aircraft manufacture, maintenance, avionics and charter support services, to the aviation industry," he said.
