The Maryborough sports community is being encouraged to get involved
in the Bligh Government's free Sport strapping workshop on Tuesday, 23
Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the workshop will greatly benefit local athletes, coaches, instructors, clubs, parents and participants in sport and recreation.
"The Sports Strapping workshop will provide free training for participants on the basic techniques of strapping for the prevention of injuries," Mr Reeves said.
"Participants will also learn the techniques of taping a thumb, finger and ankle to prevent sporting injuries."
The three-hour Sports strapping workshop will cover:
• What is strapping and the reason for its use;
• Pre- and post-strapping safety check lists and legal requirements;
• Preparing players for strapping;
• When to tape and when not to tape;
• When to refer to a professional for assessment of an injury; and
• Demonstration of correct strapping techniques for the thumb, finger and ankle.
Mr Reeves said the completion of this workshop is also a pre-requisite for the more advanced sports strapping course.
"Learning sports strapping techniques is a great tool to add to your skill set," he said.
"We want to make sure those involved in the sport industry are fully equipped with the necessary skills to ensure a safe and enjoyable time for players."
Mr Reeves said sport and recreation plays an important role in promoting healthy and active communities.
"It's crucial we provide opportunities to improve the skills of people involved in supporting these activities," Mr Reeves said.
"As part of the Bligh Government's Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland vision, we're committed to increasing the number of Queenslanders involved in their communities as volunteers by 50% by 2020.
"Volunteers are the backbone of the sport and recreation industry - on sporting fields and ovals, parks and beaches, volunteers give their valuable time to ensure Queenslanders are provided with quality opportunities to get active.
"We've made the tough economic decisions to ensure we can continue to support local sport and recreation."
