See the Coast's next big-name performer

An iconic series of live concert gigs, which have been credited for launching Pete Murray, is headed to the Sunshine Coast this November to unearth local acts.

The fRETfEST series of live concert gigs will hit the stage at the Black Box Theatre in Nambour on Saturday 28 November, giving emerging local performers a chance to show their star potential.

The series has toured around South-East Queensland since 1997, providing a respected avenue for emerging artists such as Murray to impress audiences with his original songs and get a foothold in the industry.

Murray took part in fRETfEST 2000 and said: "fRETfEST was one of my earliest gigs and it gave me the opportunity to play my original songs to an appreciative audience."

fRETfEST director Alan Buchan said its appeal was that it allowed the original performers to be the focus.

"It's about being able to enjoy authentic contemporary music without having to endure the annoying array of distractions found in many pubs these days," he said.

Local musician and former Nambour High student Jessiah Cocks was drawn to fRETfEST's offer of a live audience in an intimate setting that was not intimidating for emerging artists. He quickly became a popular solo artist and now plays in one of Brisbane's hottest new bands Blame Ringo. Jessiah will perform as the headline act at the fRETfEST session on 28 November.

fRETfEST is supported by Sunshine Coast Council and Sunshine Coast Arts Industry Precinct.

The session on Saturday 28 November kicks off at 7.30pm at the Black Box Theatre, Sunshine Coast Arts Industry Precinct at 80 Howard Street Nambour. Emerging musicians are encouraged to attend and bring a demo.

Tickets cost $10 (pre-sold) or $15 at the door. Entry for children under 16 is free, but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Local businesses are getting behind the event, which will return to Nambour each month. Tickets are available from Shake It Up Music at Nambour.
