International White Cane Day

Could you get dressed in the morning, make breakfast, catch the train and walk to the office with your eyes closed? Maybe it’s not to the office, but the shops – or the doctors – or the cinema.

What seems like an impossible challenge to many of us is a reality that blind and vision impaired Queenslanders face confidently and capably each and every day.

This International White Cane Day (15 October), we’re celebrating the freedom and independence that a simple tool like a white cane, along with the right training, can provide to someone with low or no vision.

While we’re best known for our Guide Dogs, the majority of the people we assist benefit from our training in areas like Orientation and Mobility services (including the white cane) and new technologies to keep them safe, mobile and independent every day.

International White Cane Day is a time to celebrate the positive impact Orientation and Mobility training has on the lives of so many and reflect on the ways we can all help improve access for people with low or no vision.

Here’s a few simple things you can do to help someone with a vision impairment in their daily travels:

1. Stand Aside: Remove obstacles from the person’s path, if possible.
2. Approach: Offer assistance if you suspect someone needs a hand.
3. Ask: Always ask first before providing help.
A little consideration and a helping hand can go a long way to making someone else’s day.

For Brisbane commuters, keep an eye out for our volunteers at Central and Roma Street train stations for a sweet surprise on the morning of International White Cane Day!
