Monday, 17 August, 2009 GRACE AND JESSICA'S ROAD SMART DAY
Seven Queensland announced today a Sunshine Coast Road Smart Day as a tribute to the five-year-old twins and their grandmother who tragically lost their lives in a Woombye car crash on the eve of the Mothers Day weekend this year.
Four people, including twins Grace and Jessica Hornby and their grandmother, Denise Mansell, died in a crash on Nambour Connection Road at Woombye on Friday, 8th May 2009. It was a day that would change the lives of their families forever.
Grace and Jessica's Road Smart Day is Saturday 12th September, which would have been a day of celebration for the twins' sixth birthday.
As a special tribute to the twins and their grandmother, their parents, Michael and Kelly Hornby, are asking for all Sunshine Coast residents to adorn their car with pink and purple ribbons and safely so the driver's vision isn't obscured.
"Pink and purple were the girls' favourite colours," said Kelly.
"Hopefully, every time a driver passes a car on the day and sees the ribbons, they'll think of our little angels and their grandmother that we've lost and they'll slow down and do the right thing so this doesn't happen again."
And in a special interview for Seven Local News, the parents of the twin girls will speak about the trauma and tragedy of this accident and of the need for drivers to "take care, be aware."
Their message is simple: Turn your lights on (even during the day); buckle up; leave your mobile alone; don't drink drive; don't be in a rush; have respect for others and travel at the speed limit.
The Hornbys hope that by sharing their story, and by creating a day of awareness, drivers will remember that night and drive to survive.
