Neighbourhood group meetings are informal get togethers where members bring their sewing machines and learn various aspects of sewing either from another member, or a specialist. All members of the Guild can attend the meetings of any neighbourhood group.
The Sunshine Coast and Hinterland Region has adopted a policy of attempting to meet the needs of all its members and has tried to strike a balance between dressmaking and other forms of sewing. Workshops have covered specialist techniques. These usually involve a visit and/or demonstration from a guest who conducts special demonstrations of their particular skills.
Members in the region have also been involved in supporting the local community. Trauma dolls and pretty dresses, for tiny premmie and stillborn babies, have been donated to the Queensland Ambulance Service as well as hospitals both in the Region and in Brisbane. Also ongoing appeals from various Aid Agencies, at present the members are making clothes for orphaned and abandoned children in sub Saharan Africa where the HIV/AIDS has devastated the community.
When asked what the members like most about the Guild, the response is always the same: The sharing of knowledge and skills, the education and creativity each month, together with the wonderful camaraderie and lasting friendships amongst the members.
The Guild would like to see more groups formed in the region, so that those interested in learning to sew, or sharing their skills don't have long distances to travel. If you will like to visit or join the Tewantin Group please phone Barbara on 0418 708 641 for more information.
