Gypsy musicians create fiery passion on stage

Antal Szalai and his Hungarian Gypsy Band are returning to Caloundra in October with their new show, Gypsy Fire.

Featuring traditional Gypsy, Roma & Hungarian folk music, this vibrant and sensuous show celebrates the romance, passion and fire that is Gypsy music.

Antal comes from a family of Gypsy musicians. He studied the violin at the Bela Bartok Conservatory of Music in Hungary, and then in 1967 joined the Honved Ensemble, a musical organisation which comprises a symphonic orchestra, a folk dance troupe, a choir and a Gypsy orchestra. He became leader of the Hungarian Gypsy Orchestra in 1969.

Antal explains the origins of the Gypsy band "began with primitive rhythms, created by the knocking of spoons on water cans and accompaniment. About 300 years ago, the tradition of the Gypsy band started and the band then comprised a violin, a viola, a cello and a cimbalom."

"These days we play music created in the 19th century by amateur composers, drawn to sweeten their native folk-music with Western harmonies in order to suit contemporary taste."

Antal explains, "The gypsies are very temperamental people and gypsy music comes from the heart. There is a lot of feeling and it is romantic. They also play with a different sort of rhythm that makes it more interesting".

Antal and his team of musicians will keep you on the edge of your seat while they present a rich musical menu ranging from all the old favourites such as Brahms' Hungarian Dances and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody, through to the infectious rhythms of the Hungarian 'Csardas' and 'Verbunk'.

Gypsy Fire is played and sung with fiery passion, and aptly described as an evening of raw energy and excitement.

Gypsy Fire will be performed at The Events Centre on Friday October 30 from 6pm.
