What we feed our children will have a lasting impact on their immediate and future health. The health of our children is on a steep decline - approximately 30% of Australian children today are overweight or obese, and this figure is rapidly increasing. Research now reveals that good nutrition from as early as conception and continuing throughout childhood can protect from developing diabetes, stroke, heart disease and memory loss in later life. Diet and lifestyle factors also play a large role in the modern maladies of childhood - such as ADHD and autism spectrum disorders.
Permaculture Noosa is holding a special evening on children's health titled 'Healthy Food - Healthy Kids' at our July meeting. This is a free public seminar aimed at parents, educators and anyone concerned with the health of our children.
The presenters will give parents the knowledge and tools to facilitate a shift from low nutrient, fast food towards fresh, nutrient-rich, health giving food. The workshops will empower parents-carers with the relevant information and techniques to enable them to make the necessary changes to their and their children's dietary lifestyle. The best preventative strategies for good health start with nutrition and the earlier we are exposed to them, the better.
Children's Health Seminar presented by Permaculture Noosa
17th July 2008, Cooroy Memorial Hall from 7pm
This meeting will feature three local Permaculture Noosa members who have a broad range of experience in working with children, health and food.
Session 1 : "Optimal Nutrition for Young Children"
Local naturopath, Karen McElroy, is presenting on why healthy food makes healthy kids. Karen will explore the important role different nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, fats and protein have in maintaining a healthy body and mind. She will focus in particular on the special nutritional requirements of children. Participants will be given the information and motivation to make the change from unhealthy, convenience and processed foods to a more wholesome and balanced diet for the whole family.
Session 2: "A Look Inside at the Edible School Gardens Programme"
Local gardener and educator, Leonie Shanahan, has been inspiring children to get down and dirty at school and learn about growing food with her edible school gardens programme - now at 11 schools on the sunshine coast. This session will look at the work Leonie has been doing in schools and the difference it makes to children' health, the community and the environment.
Session 3: "Putting it All Together - How to Cook Nutritious Foods for Kids"
Local 'kitchen coach', Linda Mahony, will discuss and demonstrate ways of getting healthy foods into the diets of our children. Linda will inspire parents to cook healthy foods that are easy to prepare, very tasty and economical in terms of both time and money. Linda will cook a tasty and nutritious meal and there will be tastings of some of the prepared food at supper.
